Oxford is also known as the “city of dreaming spires”, which is a reference to the architecture of it’s buildings. Much of what Oxford is today is thanks to it’s 12th and 13th century history. At this time Oxford transformed into a centre of learning and to counter balance the technological advances the government built several religious structures.
The word “Oxford” comes from the Saxon word “Oxenforda” which literally means “Ford of the Ox”.
