Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, but unlike other European capitals it only has a population of 500,000. If you know your cities, you know that makes for a friendlier population.
Edinburgh has two extinct volcanoes, one is right in the City Center and Edinburgh Castle is built on top of it.

The city has some great festivals and events:
International Science Festival (6-18 April 2009)
Their focus is on getting children excited about science and technology.
Venues include the National Museums Scotland, the Royal Botanic Gardens and Our Dynamic Earth.
Edinburgh International Film Festival (18-29 June 2008)
The EIFF includes 142 feature films from 29 countries. You can buy your tickets on the EIFF web site from the 9th May. In the source list, of this article, you will find a link to their web site.
Edinburgh Art Festival (31 July - 31 August 2008)
The event includes visual art exhibitions, events and activities. Exhibitions of Scottish as well as international artists are on show.
Edinburgh International Festival (8-31 August 2008)
The festival includes ballet and acting, but is mainly a classical music festival. Artists are invited from all over Europe and the Middle East to participate in the event.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival (3-25 August 2008)
This is an arts festival held on the fringe of the Edinburgh International Festival. It has an open-access for all performers policy. The event has gained in popularity in recent years, they currently sell 1.6 mil tickets every year.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo (1-23 August 2008)
Scotland has a long and eventful military history. During this range of events there is allot of Scottish music, parades and horses. It is quite a spectacle and good fun for the whole family.
You will have to book tickets early as they sell out quickly.

Hogmanay (29 December - 1 January 2008)
These are the Scottish new years celebrations. Events include the Torchlight Procession and the world famous Royal Bank Street Party.
If you are in Scotland, on new year, I really recommend these festivities.
